Modern designers and homeowners are increasingly focusing on the "fifth wall," with a wide range of ceiling treatments rooted in historic architecture to enhance interior design. In an interview with The Advocate, Wendy noted a trend away from the traditional white ceilings of 15 years ago. Clients are now embracing more adventurous options like adding color and patterns to ceilings.

In New Orleans, where high ceilings were favored for their cooling and grand appearance, ceilings are adorned with painted finishes and plaster medallions. Wallpaper has become popular for ceilings, bringing patterns and coziness to rooms, following trends like cottage core. Paint is versatile; darker colors suit high ceilings, while lighter shades suit lower ones. High-gloss or lacquered finishes add glamour.

Architectural elements, like lattice treatments, coffered ceilings, and beams, add texture and dimension. While coffering might overwhelm low ceilings, adding prefab fretwork panels, beams, or upholstered surfaces can personalize a space. Stripping away ceiling features creates spaciousness, but adding features like cathedral ceilings or groin vaults can enhance vertical space. Syncing ceiling design with the overall aesthetic is crucial.

The key to successful ceiling designs is intentionality, ensuring they harmonize with the overall interior. Wendy's role as an architect and designer emphasizes considering ceilings and all surfaces to create a cohesive design.

In summary, ceilings are gaining attention as a crucial design element. The trend involves incorporating color, patterns, and architectural features to transform the often-neglected ceiling into a visually engaging focal point that complements the overall interior design.
